Medium: acrylic paint on canvases Dimensions: 60"×90" composed of six 30"×30" canvases Date: 12/04/09
This is my final project from the Painting II course. My original idea was to create six surreal landscapes with building ruins on a square format canvas; however, I found it quite difficult to create six different landscapes using a specific color palette in each. My solution was to create one large landscape consisting of six interesting fragments. I wanted to mix reality with fantasy rather than to create a representational landscape; therefore the theme of this work could be described as a mysterious, surreal, and fantasy-like landscape. The whole landscape was supposed to change from a warm sunset into a cool night (going from left to right). Technically, it was also supposed to become more abstract as it changes in the color palette and the day time. I could not work on all of the canvases at once, so it was quite challenging to make a smooth transition from one painting into another. Moreover, as I have never painted any landscapes before, I found it challenging to paint the sky. The main inspiration for this specific theme came from my favorite artist Hayao Miyazaki and his breathtaking animated movies. The idea of ruins in this painting also came from my traveling across Lithuania, which is full of ancient castles, old manors, and abandoned living places. It is the largest and most challenging painting I have worked on. Even though this work consists of six canvases, I consider it to be as a one large painting because the pieces can be arranged only in one particular order to reveal what lies behind them.
Thank you for viewing. Your critique is appreciated.
There is so much individual and particular detail, colour and texture in each panel that captures a singular mood but they combine to a narrative suggesting the passage of a very long time in this space.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
